Play Ball!

Aug 14, 2017 | Past Stories

Nothing says summer time quite like a game of baseball. So that’s exactly what Club members from Boys & Girls Club of the Austin Area and Georgetown did! They played ball—86 of them to be exact. Club members from both locations geared up for a morning full of fun, laughs, and exercise at the Round Rock Express Baseball Clinic on July 19. The event took place at the Dell Diamond field and was planned in partnership with the Austin Police Department Athletic League.

For most of the morning and into the early afternoon, Club members took turns at bat, ran the bases, and practiced catching pop-flies, fielding ground balls, and pitching. Members rotated between four different stations that focused on a different skill and drill. While one location focused on pitching, another had our youth running around the bases, relay-race style, trying to get the opposing team’s runner out. And while each station differed, Jennifer Knight, Director of Healthy Lifestyles, said the pitching station was everyone’s favorite. To put their recently-practiced skills to the test, Club members, law enforcement, and a few Round Rock Express pitchers played a full ballgame.

The outing didn’t end there. Youth heard from Austin Police Officers about their roles in law enforcement. During the discussion, kids learned about safety and were encouraged to ask questions, too. The group also got to tour the stadium, which was quite the treat for our Club members.

After the clinic, event participants enjoyed a barbecue lunch from Rudy’s BBQ and all the kids received a Swag Bag for their participation (another event favorite, said Knight). Inside was a water bottle, a BGC bracelet and a baseball signed by the Round Rock Express team.

This was the second annual baseball clinic Boys & Girls Clubs have arranged with the Round Rock Express, and given its home run success, we’re sure we’ll see the event again in the future.
