BGCAA proudly joined our partners from the Affordable Childcare NOW Coalition at the Travis County Commissioner’s Court hearing on Aug. 13th when the court unanimously voted to advance the CARES Resolution to a ballot initiative this November!
This means that Travis County residents will have the opportunity to show up big for our kids by voting to approve the resolution, which would expand access to childcare, afterschool, and summer services for low-income families.
We’d like to send a huge shout out to our 2024 Youth of the Year, Marley, who eloquently addressed the court and shared the deep impact that the Boys & Girls Clubs afterschool programs had on the lives of her family members by providing her and her siblings with mentorship, supporting them emotionally and academically, and creating space for her single mother to work and support her family.
We know that a lack of access to affordable childcare has a negative impact on our kids, working families, and our community as a whole. When families cannot afford childcare, parents and caregivers are unable to work, earn a living, and give back to society. Studies also show that afterschool and summer programs lead to better social, academic, and health outcomes for our kids.
To us, the CARES Resolution is a win-win-win for EVERYONE – youth, working families, and our community, which thrives when each one of us thrives.
We thank all of the coalition members for their hard work in advancing this resolution, and we hope to see everyone at the polls on November 5th!
